The excellent light output of the Petromax lamp comes about through a simple but fascinating principle: kerosene is fed into a carburetor under pressure, the evaporating fuel reacts in a mantle impregnated with luminous salts to produce a bright, warm light. To ensure that this principle works perfectly, the lamp, which consists of more than 200 individual parts, is still assembled by hand.
